Educational Aims
The overall aims of the programme are:
- To provide flexible learning opportunities to Hearing Aid Dispensers (HAD) who wish to re-register with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and return to practice
- To re-gain confidence and competence to meet the HCPC standards of education/proficiency in the HAD profession
Furthermore, we will prepare an individual learning plan to make sure that the activities you carry out to update your knowledge and skills are in the area in which you plan to work when you begin practising again. So, we will consider your prior experience, any relevant skills you gained whilst out of practice, and any relevant developments in the profession during the time when you were out of practice; at the start of the course.
Course Features and Requirements
The purpose of this course is to enable the practitioners to renew registration and re-enter registered practice with up-to-date competence, current skills and confidence in order to achieve the minimum requirement to maintain safe and effective standards of care.
Before applying for this course, you are required to have read the official HCPC guidance document i.e. Information about our requirements for professionals returning to practice [2] This guidance provides information about the process you need to complete if you are returning to practice after a break of more than two years.
In essence, if you are returning to practice, HCPC needs you to update your knowledge and skills as follows:
- 0 to 2 years out of practice – no requirements
- 2 to 5 years out of practice – 30 days of updating
- 5 or more years out of practice – 60 days of updating
In the ‘days’ requirements above, HCPC consider one day to be equivalent to seven hours. Furthermore, HCPC stipulates that your period of updating knowledge and skills can be made up of any combination of:
- supervised practice
- formal study; or
- private study
Within the current course, we will offer you a total of 15 days of formal study via eLearning, which you can complete at your own pace and in your own time, thus following a Flexible & Distributed Learning (FDL) learning system. Furthermore, each delegate will have to study additional material for 15 days of private study. We will develop the private reading list based on your individual learning plan at the start of the course.
At the end of the course, there will be theory and practical assessment based on the supervised and private learning material. Details of examination will be discussed at the time of enrolment. On successful completion of the course and passing the theory/practical examination, you should be able to fulfil HCPC’s learning requirements for return-to-practice and re-apply for registration, provided that you were out of practice from 2 to 5 years[3]
If you have been out of practice for more than five years, you will need to undertake an additional period of supervised practice for 30 days. Please discuss this with the course co-ordinator before enrolling into the course.
